Nestled along the Kenyan coastline, Diani’s natural beauty is a major attraction, but behind the scenes, waste management has become a significant challenge. Enterprises and local communities face daily struggles with organic waste disposal, and the options available often emphasize financial convenience over sustainability. Inadequate waste handling practices are impacting Diani’s environment, creating a pressing need for efficient, eco-friendly solutions.

Terra Safi’s mission is to help businesses manage their organic waste in ways that benefit the environment without disrupting the waste collection system. By providing an alternative pathway and reducing landfill dependency, Terra Safi is transforming Diani’s approach to organic waste.

Diani’s beautiful coastline—a precious environment in need of sustainable practices

The Problem: Business Waste Management Gaps

Despite the desire for better practices, many businesses in Diani hesitate to invest in sustainable waste management solutions. Waste producers already bear costs linked to their waste management and despite taking steps to segregate waste, they often find that everything ends up in the same landfill—leaving their efforts unmet.

With Terra Safi, however, these challenges can be overcome. We work closely with waste producers to ensure their organic waste gets a sustainable end-of-life. They benefit from knowing the organic waste produced will be managed responsibly, and we’re helping turn eco-conscious intentions into tangible actions.

One of our trainings in session.

Terra Safi’s Solution: Enabling Sustainable Waste Practices

At Terra Safi, our approach is about empowering communities to adopt eco-friendly waste practices without disrupting their operations. We work within the existing waste collection system, partnering with companies already committed to segregation and those just starting their sustainable journey. We ensure our partners have the support they need through training, capacity building, and consistent follow-ups.

Our partners include some of the region’s most eco-conscious organizations, who value collaborating with us. They’re investing in a cleaner environment and also building their reputation as leaders in sustainability.

Follow-ups are essential for minimising errors and ensuring smooth operations. They provide an opportunity to engage directly, answer questions, and build confidence among the people implementing these practices every day.

Through these visits, we’re not just offering a service—we’re building a culture of sustainability, empowering our partners to take ownership of their role in protecting the environment.

    Our Organic Waste Management Process

Our process highlights a meticulous, eco-conscious approach to handling organic waste. By overlooking collection and managing at each stage of the composting process — we demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and high-quality outcomes. Here’s a summary emphasizing each step’s benefits:

    1. Collection: Terra Safi’s use of compostable bags encourages sustainable waste disposal right from the start, eliminating the reliance on non-biodegradable, single-use plastics. This not only reduces plastic waste but also reinforces eco-friendly habits among waste producers.

    2. Sorting at the Facility: By conducting a final sorting phase, we ensure that only compostable materials enter the composting process, maximizing efficiency and preventing contamination. This extra layer of quality control ensures the highest standards for compost production.

    3. Composting Process: Using in-vessel composting we create the ideal environment for natural decomposition, letting beneficial bacteria thrive without added chemicals or enzymes. By controlling odour, leachate, and pests, in-vessel composting addresses the common issues of traditional composting, producing a high-quality, nutrient-rich compost that’s safe and environmentally friendly.

    Field Trials

We’ve partnered with KALRO (Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization) and local farmers to conduct field trials measuring the impact of Terra Safi’s compost. These trials aim to understand how our compost is enhancing soil structure and water retention, especially in Diani’s sandy, porous soils, while contributing to long-term soil health.

For local farmers, the trials offer insights into a sustainable alternative that could reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers. Though the trials are ongoing, this partnership reflects our commitment to developing an effective compost solution that aligns with both environmental and agricultural needs.

Our Impact on the Diani Community

Terra Safi’s facility doesn’t just transform organic waste—it’s also creating job opportunities and providing fair employment to the local community. Our employees work in safe conditions, and a well-equipped environment, being empowered to contribute to our sustainability efforts. We run our whole operations with solar energy, as a further pledge to our dedication towards environmental responsibility hoping to inspire other like-minded organizations in taking on the same commitment for more sustainable operations.

Thanks to a capacity-building path carried out by Terra-Safi to M-Safi Waste Collectors, nowadays the collection of segregated waste in Diani is being transformed and given value by both the collectors, since they work more efficiently, and by the communities that have the assurance that their waste does not end up in the landfill. By partnering with M-Safi, we ensure that waste collectors can bring their loads directly to our facility at no added cost. Our streamlined system makes their work faster, cleaner, and safer, giving them more time and capacity to serve their communities.

Terra Safi seeks to elevate waste collection, an essential work from being stigmatized to a vital activity within the community, restoring the dignity of waste collectors in society as an essential part of a sustainable future.

    Scaling Sustainability in Kenya

Terra Safi demonstrates that organic waste, once viewed as a challenge for its cumbersome handling, can now be managed sustainably. By working with waste producers and communities, we’re reducing landfill waste, creating jobs, and promoting eco-conscious practices that make a real difference.

As we continue our work in Diani, our vision is to scale this model across Kenya, offering more organizations access to sustainable eco-friendly solutions. We hope our story inspires many to support and share the mission of sustainable organic waste management.

Join us in spreading the word! Share Terra Safi’s story and be part of the solution to making a positive impact on Kenya’s communities and environment. Together, we can build a greener, more sustainable future!
